Forgotten by Men, Chosen by God
David’s Journey from the Sheepfold to the Throne and What It Means for Us Today
Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 16:6–12
“For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7
Have you ever felt overlooked?
Have you ever watched others receive opportunities while you were passed by? Have you ever felt forgotten, ignored, underestimated, or unappreciated?
If so, you are not alone.
David knew exactly what that felt like.
When the prophet Samuel arrived at Jesse’s house to anoint the next king of Israel, everyone assumed one of David’s older brothers would be chosen. They appeared stronger, taller, more experienced, and more impressive.
Even Samuel himself was initially impressed by Eliab.
But God had a different perspective.
God was not looking for the strongest man in the room.
He was looking for the right heart.
David was not even invited to stand before the prophet. While his brothers were being considered, David was out in the fields caring for sheep.
Forgotten by men.
But never forgotten by God.
God Chooses Those Whose Hearts Belong to Him
People are reading this today whom God has chosen and called for His purposes.
God knows it, even if others do not see it.
No one imagined that David would be God’s choice.
Samuel initially looked for someone who appeared more impressive.
Jesse naturally favoured his older sons.
But God looked beyond appearances and searched for a heart that desired to please Him.
Are you seeking to please God today?
If Jesus is first in your life, then nothing else matters. God will use your life for His glory and purposes.
Matthew 6:33
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
God’s calling begins with a surrendered heart.
God Looks at the Heart
The Lord said:
“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
People are often deceived by appearances.
We notice clothing, success, education, wealth, influence, personality, and reputation.
God sees deeper.
He sees motives.
He sees intentions.
He sees character.
He sees faith.
And He is never mistaken.
What a comfort it is to know that God understands us completely.
He sees beyond our struggles, weaknesses, and failures.
He sees who we are becoming through His grace.
May we learn to see others the way God sees them.
God Uses the Overlooked to Accomplish Great Things
David would one day kill Goliath.
Gideon would defeat a vast army with only 300 men.
Israel would conquer mighty Jericho.
Jesus would feed more than five thousand people with a few loaves and fish.
The twelve apostles would help transform the world through the power of the Gospel.
Again and again, Scripture reminds us that God delights in using ordinary and overlooked people to accomplish extraordinary things.
The world often celebrates the powerful.
God often chooses the faithful.
What might God do through your life if it is fully surrendered to Him?
Never underestimate what God can accomplish through a willing heart.
God Examines the Heart
Samuel considered many candidates before finding God’s chosen servant.
Outwardly, David’s brothers appeared impressive.
But God saw something that others could not see.
He examined their hearts.
The same question applies to us today.
How is your heart?
Do you remember David’s brothers standing on the battlefield while Goliath challenged Israel?
They appeared strong, yet they lacked courage and faith.
God saw beyond appearances.
God saw their hearts.
And He still does.
God Understands the Pain of Being Overlooked
Samuel asked Jesse:
“Are all your sons here?”
Jesse replied:
“There remains yet the youngest.”
David knew what it felt like to be overlooked.
He was left in the fields while his brothers stood before the prophet.
His heart must have known the pain of rejection and the longing to be recognised and affirmed.
Many people today understand that same pain.
There are countless people who feel forgotten, ignored, rejected, or pushed aside.
But your Heavenly Father is not like that.
He sees you.
He knows you.
He loves you.
God often lifts up those whom the world overlooks.
Today, allow your Heavenly Father to affirm you and surround you with His love.
God chooses and anoints His people out of love.
The Spirit of God Came Upon David
When Samuel anointed David, the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.
Everything changed.
Not because David suddenly became important in the eyes of men.
But because God had chosen him.
The same God who called David still works in people’s lives today.
The Spirit of God can work through David, through Peter, through Paul, through ordinary believers, and through you.
God delights in using willing hearts.
Be Faithful in the Small Things
What did David do while waiting for God’s plan to unfold?
He worshipped God.
He played his harp.
He cared for the sheep.
He remained faithful in the small things.
Before God entrusted David with a kingdom, He entrusted him with a flock.
Sometimes we are so eager for the future that we forget the importance of today’s responsibilities.
God has placed you where you are for a reason.
Serve Him faithfully.
Do your work well.
Remain obedient.
Trust Him.
And believe that God will pour out His Spirit upon every willing and obedient heart.
Final Thoughts
Perhaps you feel forgotten.
Perhaps you feel overlooked.
Perhaps you wonder whether God can use your life.
The answer is yes.
Prepare your heart.
Seek Him first.
Remain faithful where He has placed you.
Trust His timing.
The God who chose David still chooses ordinary people today.
And He still delights in using those whose hearts belong fully to Him.
You may be forgotten by men.
But you are never forgotten by God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You see beyond appearances and look directly at the heart.
When we feel overlooked, rejected, forgotten, or ignored, remind us that we are known and loved by You.
Help us to seek You first, remain faithful in the small things, and trust Your plans for our lives.
Prepare our hearts for Your purposes and pour out Your Spirit upon all who desire to serve You faithfully.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
